About the Artist

Brittney Waters is a very outgoing person with a fun personality. She is a senior undergrad working towards her BFA in Cal State Long Beach School of Art Ceramics Program. She was influenced to make an exhibit of Sea Turtles after a trip to Hawaii. She realized that there haven’t been sightings of sea turtle nestings, but we do see sea turtles. She realized that a lot of wildlife isn’t supported unless there is entertainment for us, and this is where #MoreThanASandbox began.

Formal Analysis

Water’s turtles have the emmaculate detail of a realistic hatchling for each and every one. You can tell she clearly spent a lot of time on each turtle to nail every detail from a discoloration in the shell to using glossy black paint for the eyes of the turtle to make them look alive. Some of her turtles were even dipped in sand after varnished to add texture and authenticity.

Content Analysis

Water’s exhibit is about bringing awareness to sea turtles. The fact that we do not see turtle nest’s on our beach is alarming, turtles need to be preserved. Water’s realized wildlife is not supported unless there is entertainment provided for us, like I mentioned above, so she began to start the project to bring attention to sea turtles. When making each individual turtle, she really thought about every quality of a turtle she could put into each piece to make them look as realistic as possible.

Synthesis/My Experience

Personally, I loved this exhibit so much! I can say this is probably my favorite artist I’ve seen at school so far. Each turtle had so much time and detail put into it, you could clearly see that. I even asked her how long each turtle took her to make and she said roughly 3 hours from start to finish. That’s amazing! Her keen attention to detail really brought this whole exhibit together and I enjoyed it a lot.
